Halloween

Halloween by the International Student Club USB
Halloween library: it was an event with which we wanted to remind people about the yearly celebration of Halloween. Did we succeed? What was going on?

Halloween library

A few days before 31 October we made decorations such as small paper bats and spiders, ghosts, and a big spider on a spider web. In addition, we also prepared pumpkins, rubber spiders, and Halloween lantern; the librarians lent us a witch. The entrance was decorated to look like a monster’s mouth.
The Academic library was decorated on the 30 October in the evening, so the visitors experienced Halloween on the correct day. They entered the library through our monster entrance. The library witch was standing at the turnstiles. On the staircase, you could have seen the paper bats and spiders and also the big spider and ghost. Actually, most of the paper bats didn’t last long and disappeared – someone says that students took them home, while others blame supernatural forces.
What else could our visitors see and experience? By reading our posters they learned a few interesting stories about Halloween history and mysteries. On Halloween Friday from 10 to 12 AM, our courageous visitors petted the school python Škubánek, and played with cockroaches and worms. What’s more, our visitors were also playing traditional Halloween games such as Apple bobbing, Apple peeling and Feel box.
For competitive visitors we prepared a competition. At first, they had to solve our puzzle and find our treasure in the library. First prize was a hat handmade by our mentor Eliška Popelková, while the other contestants obtained books from the Kanzelsberger bookstore, DVDs of the undersea world, and promotional university items.

Other Halloween events

We were simultaneously preparing for our Halloween party by carving pumpkins and preparing our Halloween costumes. The Halloween party took place in the K2 club on the Halloween night.
Every Czech child knows the term trail of courage, but foreign students seem to be generally ignorant of it. For this reason, we decided to prepare a trail of courage in Branišovský forest for them. And do you know what? We had to prepare two terms, due to the overwhelming interest! Our trail of courage was attended by 85 participants.

Trail of courage

A trail of courage is a well-known way of entertainment in the Czech Republic. It’s an organized night walking through scary places based on testing of participants’ courage.
How does it work? The important thing is that the trail of courage has to be adapted to the person’s age, because the trail of courage can be prepared for young children as well as for adults. Participants can, but don’t have to meet ghosts and monsters along the way. Participants walk alone or in groups. Participants have to accomplish their tasks or there’re no tasks. The scenario is always decided by the organizer.

Now, we’ll describe a hypothetical trail of courage for camping kids in their teens. Imagine that we’re the organizers and the events takes place in summer. That means that the nights are warm and the darkness falls quite early. This is perfect, because it’s no good to make children to stay awake late in the night.

A good place for the trail of courage is a forest. At first, we have to find a good road and walk it and check, if it’s safe. The longer the route the more fun, but also the longer the route the more the ghosts we need. The essential is to have enough adults playing ghosts in case anything happens. They have to be able to react to it as fast as possible. Then we have to mark our route for the trail, for instance using candles, ropes, retro-reflectors etc. to insure a clear route. We make a few checkpoints with ghosts along the way and prepare tasks like saying a poem, singing, making squats etc. After completion of the task, the participants get a stamp. As for the end of the route, a good place is a haunted place like a cemetery, or a chapel. We get ready some sweets for our courageous participants.

Before the events, our ghost and monsters go to their destinations. We give every group of children a paper for stamps. Each group leaves 15 Minutes after the last one, so they won’t meet. After the last group leaves, we move to the end of our route and wait for the arrival of groups.

Children pass our marked path and fulfill the tasks along the way. Our ghosts are patrolling, haunting and scaring our participants. Since our participant are already in their teens, our ghost can afford to frighten them properly. They make sounds like screaming and crackling while getting closer to our participants. Finally, our participants reach the end of our route. Then we check the number of stamps on their papers. After meeting all of our requirements, the children receive sweet rewards to calm down and regain their peace.
After the last group arrives, we count all the children. In case of a right number of them, we go back to our camp.

Halloween party

The icing on the cake was our Halloween party!

Vchod do knihovny pak připomínal tlamu nějakého monstra.

Přímo v pátek na Halloween jsme společně s knihovnou připravili celodenní soutěž s hledáním pokladu. Úspěšní nálezci, kteří vyluštili hádanku a nalezli poklad si pak mohli odnést krásně ceny. Úplně první nálezkyně získala krásného ručně pleteného kulíška z dílny naší mentorky Elišky Popelkové, další studenti pak získali knihy z knihkupectví Kanzelsberger, DVD s podmořským dokumentem a propagační předměty univerzity. Celkem bylo připraveno více jak 30 cen. Odvážlivci si v Akademickém klubu v době od 10 do 12h mohli pohladit zvířatka zapůjčené z PřF JU. Konkrétně se jednalo o hroznýše Škubánka, syčíci madagaskarské šváby, moučně červy a strašilky. Návštěvníci měli také možnost zahrát si tradiční Halloweenské hry – konkrétně lovení jablek pusou z vody (Apple boobing), loupání jablka a Feel box.
