Orientation walk and Welcome party report, Winter 2013

On Friday 4.10.2013 we held orientation walk for international students, we showed them campus and its surroundings and also town of České Budějovice. We played a small game in which all students participated and had to talk to one another and therefore get to know each other. In the evening we were having a welcome party in Café Klub Slávie. Unfortunately rector Libor Grubhoffer and vicerector Dagmar Škodová Parmová were unable to come, so the welcome was done only by Martina Balzarova (Director of International Student Club). One of the mentors Ruda talked to them about planned trips and events. Students than watched a small video about Czech Republic and what they can see and experience in our country and than it was free time to meeting, talking and dancing.

We have welcomed around 130 new international students from many different countries. From 22pm the party was opened for public to meet and greet with foreigners.

During the night there was a small suprise – performance of salsa dancers and also teaching of some salsa moves. Everybody enjoyed the party and we are looking forward to some new events :)

Mentors Action Day 28.9.2013 – report

First ever Mentors Action Day was held on Saturday 28.9.2013. This event was organized specially for mentors to get to know each other before the beginning of the semester and to exchange experience and knowledge with mentoring. This point of the meeting was very usefull especially for new mentors. Also mentors could adress the leading students of the International Student Club with any topic, suggestion and problems…

In the morning we visited Lanový park Máj (rope park). There was possiblity to choose between 2 different routes – easy one and harder one. That was a tough choose really :) So few brave ones tried the harder part. After this we suited up and recieve instructions how to behave, move and specially secure ourselves.

The challenge itself was to climb up using ladder to the platform where the obstacle course started – around 10m heigh. Obstacles varied from quite easy to really complicated. The harder part contained 15 obtacles (including flyingfox) and the course is 130 m long. The easier part is situated on lower level (around 6-8m) and contains 14 obstacles and it is 100 m long. This course is suitable even for children.

Experience was really intense and everyone will rememeber it for long time :) It was real adrenaline treat.

Because the weather was quite cold, around 5°C we had a break to warm up and met again for lunch in Bowling Jiskra. The weather was much better and warmer bu that time and even sun started shining. After eating together we had more fun a head of us – bowling. We played several games, some go really nice scores but it was mostly just for fun – no tournament or rivality :D

After that we sad for some time and continue talking about different stuff and slowly finished.

The first meeting of this kind was really sucessfull and we will be preparing similar one for our mentors in the future.

Budweiser Budvar

On Saturday 23.3. 2013 we visited Budweiser Budvar brewery. We met at 10 am (obviously a bit too early for some people :-)) in front of IGY and at 10:30 we took a bus to the brewery. There were exactly 20 people and we had a really nice older guy as a guide.
He showed us around and in the ceiling most of us tasted special beer which is not available in shops. We were just a bit disappointed because all the machines were switched off. The tour took around an hour and after taking some pictures we set off back.
